International Roll Forming Process

Roll forming is a continuous metal forming process taking sheet, strip, or coiled stock and bending or forming it into shapes of essentially identical cross section by feeding the metal between successive pairs of rolls that increasingly shape it until the desired cross section is completed adding both strength and rigidity to lightweight materials. The process adds both rigidity and strength to the roll formed material. During the roll forming process, only bending occurs. The thickness of the metal is not changed except for a slight thinning of the material at the bend radius.

Roll Forming Process
The roll forming process characteristics include:
• Its common usage to mass produce mass long metal pieces with relatively close tolerances,
• The utilization of ductile workpiece materials, softer metals,
• Working with materials that are usually less than 1/8" thick and 20" wide,
• The capability to produce desired workpieces at a forming speed of 100 feet per minute (fpm),
• Its strong suitability to produce decorative and structural metal products often for roofing and siding.

Roll forming machines are now being produced so that for similar products such as stud and track profiles, a new set of profile rolls is not required. This is achieved by the mill being split along its center line and the web, flange and ear sizes are set using a control panel which moves the mill rafts centrally to increase or decrease the aforementioned features.

Custom Roll Forming benefits
• High-speed, high-volume fabricating process,
• Infinite number of shapes possible,
• Thinner cross sections and practically any length can be roll formed,
• uniformed cross sectional dimensions throughout the length of the part,
• Almost any metal can be roll formed
• Eliminates multiple operations - secondary operations can be done at the same time, e.g., punching, notching, etc., thus saving valuable time
